CHAPTER SIXTEEN

THE GHOSTS OF OUR PAST

He woke up in a dimly lit room, with cobwebs stuck to corners of the ceiling. The wall around him was of cobblestone, and the room bore a damp scent. The bed he was laid on was very deeply uncomfortable.

The first few minutes after he woke were spent trying hard to remember what had happened. His head was plagued with a greatly discomforting throbbing sensation, and his skin felt prickly all over, the tips of his fingers annoyingly numb.

The memories returned in fragments. He remembered Meredith being turned to a wall, and darted upright in his bed at once. It was then that he noticed he wasn’t in just any room—he was in a cell. A prison.

Ahead of him, metal bars separated him from a dark corridor. Panic set in for him then, causing his heart to race. He bolted to his feet and ran at the bars, slammed into it, rattling them powerfully. “Hey!” he screamed at the top of his lungs. “Let me out! You can’t hold me in here!! The Holy Hand will search for me, you bastard! You won’t get away with this!”

A grunt came from beyond his cell, followed by the shuffling of lazy feet. A moment later, a towering guard appeared on the other side of the cell, much of his face hidden by the helmet he wore. All Conrad could make out and this was largely thanks to the torch the guard held, were the man’s light brown eyes.

The guard examined Conrad for a moment. “Yer awake, huh. Took your sweet time.”

“Who the hell are you?!” Conrad demanded. “You can’t keep me—,”

Conrad’s voice trailed when he noticed then, that the guard before him was donning familiar colors. He was donning the colors of Erinth.

Conrad’s eyes went wide. “Wait. I’m still in Erinth?”

“Right you are,” the guard snorted. “Yer in the dungeons of the High Castle. Precautionary hold, I’m told. You’re not a real criminal or at least, they’re undecided about whether or not you’re a real criminal. All I know is there was a girl turned to stone and a valuable item missing, and you being the only person found at the scene.”

“I need to see someone,” Conrad said at once. “Mason, Arthur, Nathan, anyone. Let me out of here.”

“I can’t do that, m’afraid,” the guard shook his head. “But hang on just a moment, I’ll go alert the upfolks of your waking. They’ve been waiting three days to hear from you, so you better have something damn good to tell them.”

And then the guard was gone, leaving Conrad with the frightening knowledge that he’d been unconscious for three entire days. Conrad shook his head, paced his cell for a moment, replaying the events in his head once more.

Whoever Priest was knew an awful lot about them. He’d known of Claudia and Conrad’s unique situation. Of Meredith’s backstory, something Conrad hadn’t even been aware of. More than that, he’d known of a secret section in the vault, knew exactly where to find the thing that he’d wanted.
